A sail works by pressure difference — air moving faster across the curved outer face than the flat inner one, drawing the boat forward rather than pushing it. It is the same principle that lifts a bird's wing, and the reason a fleet at a regatta appears to lean into the wind rather than run from it. Serena has spent enough mornings watching that fleet set out to want to keep the shape of it.
Each sail is lined with diamonds, set to catch light the way canvas does at the turn of a tack. Beneath it hangs a single rare stone, chosen and matched individually. Hanging on a stud fitting, so the sail sits level and the stone swings free.
