Ammonite - Ammonites were extinct, coiled-shell marine cephalopods related to modern squid and octopus that thrived from the Devonian period until dying out 66 million years ago with the dinosaurs. These predators used chambered shells for buoyancy and are crucial index fossils for dating rock layers. They are also known commonly in England as ‘snakestones’ - “If you break them you find within stony serpents, wreathed up in circles, but eternally without heads.” William Camden, 1586.
